The Secret Campsite has caught my attention as being rather a brilliant looking place, but sadly it doesn’t accept campervans so I was very happy when Leila (or Mudpie Mama), from the lovely outdoor play blog MudMudMarvellousMud, told me she was taking her 1 year old on his first camping trip to The Secret Campsite, I leapt at the chance to get a review from a trusted source. And here it is!

Where: The Secret Campsite, Sussex, BN8 4TD

How Much: For camping, £13 per adult per night, £6.50 per child over 5 per night. Under 5’s free

Campfires: Yes, in designated fire pits

Wood: Yes, £6.50 per night

Types of camping: Tents only. There is option to stay in a cool Tree Tent, The Arkette and The Bell Tent. See website for details

Facilities: Showers, toilets (compostable and normal), indoor washing up area

Where: Namparra, Kuggar, The Lizard, Cornwall

How much: Varies by season but £16 per night max

Campfires: A Cornish shovel is provided to dig firepits (look next to toilets).

Wood: Is sold at reception and delivered in the evening, sometimes need a bit of prodding to get the wood delivered in reasonable time. £4 per good sized bag, decent logs. Ps You might need an axe.

Facilities: Toilets and showers, under cover washing up and launderette area. Trampoline for the kids. Bar area.

Fires: In ready made fire pits adjoining pitches. Some are shared.

Types of camping: All units accepted.

Dogs: Allowed

Facilities: 2 composting toilets (the nicest I’ve ever seen!), 1 portaloo, 1 small honesty shop selling mostly goat produce from the small holding.

I have been researching campsites in Wales, particularly Pembrokeshire.  Turns out there are a clutch of really rather great campsites. Pembrokeshire offers wild coast lines, hidden coves, huge sandy beaches, very little light pollution and far fewer crowds than many areas of Cornwall.
